Dance/Movement Therapy Sessions
Your body remembers—let it speak.
Service Description
The first communication we have in our lives is one that we are moving. It’s a way of revisiting the essence of what basic communication is all about. Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) looks at the correlation between movement and emotion, as a form of expressive therapy that integrates what we think and what we feel. Also known as “movement psychotherapy,” there’s no one type of dance used with this type of therapy. It can be anything from traditional ballroom dancing to something more fluid like yoga. Keep in mind that these do not have to be choreographed dances. DMT involves moving your body in a therapeutic setting with a licensed practitioner. During these sessions, the therapist uses movement to help the client understand emotional, cognitive, physical, and social behaviors. It is defined by the American Dance/Movement Therapy Association as “The psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive and physical integration of the individual. for the purpose of improving health and well-being.” Benefits Enhances effective communication, Improves self-esteem and body image Gain insights into patterns of behaviors, while creating new options for resolutions Helps to release trauma that’s imprinted in the mind as a result of experiences in the body and nervous system Promotes stress reduction, disease prevention, and mood management Muscular strength, coordination, mobility, and decreased muscular tension.
